In 2017, the Washington D.C. region generated $7.3 billion, growing at a rate of 1.0%. The region’s 2017 growth rate was the smallest growth rate experienced by the seven tribal gaming regions. The region’s low growth rate is attributed to the increased competition in the Northeastern United States. Since the beginning of 2016, New York and Connecticut based tribal casinos have experienced increased competition from six new casinos opening in New York and two new casinos in Massachusetts. Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians Becomes First Tribal Nation to Offer Sports Wagering: On August 30, 2018, the Pearl River Resort began offering sports wagering, making the Mississippi Band of Choctaw the first tribal nation to offer sports wagering at a tribal casino. The tribe benefited from Mississippi's move to legalize sports wagering for the State’s commercial casinos operating along the Mississippi River and Gulf of Mexico. Mohegan Continues Its Forward Thinking Expansion: In 2007, the Mohegan Sun generated more than $900 million from slot machines alone. Today, the casino generates only two-thirds of the revenue it once did, due to increased commercial gaming competition cannibalizing its revenue base. However, the Mohegan nation has not resigned itself to geographic circumstances. The nation has reinvested its casino revenues through their Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment (MGE) corporation which first expanded beyond Connecticut with wholly owned commercial casinos in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and in 2016 began serving as a gaming management company for casinos. In 2018, the expansion efforts continued as MGE began managing the tribal owned Paragon Casino Resort in Louisiana and announced international expansion as the management company for the Ontario Lottery owned casinos located in Niagara, Ontario.
