In 2017, the Phoenix region surpassed $3.0 billion in gaming revenues for the first time in its history, growing at a rate of 3.6%. The overall growth for the Phoenix region marked the third consecutive year of overall gaming revenue growth. However, what was most notable about the 2017 growth was the fact that the average revenue per casino also increased. Prior to 2017, the average revenue per casino had been declining since 2013. Santa Ana Star Casino & Hotel Quickly Capitalizes on Sports Wagering: The Santa Ana Pueblo acted quickly upon the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn PASPA and began offering sports wagering in October 2018. The Pueblo’s ability to quickly capitalize on sports wagering was attributed to the fast work of its tribal gaming regulatory authority, a partnership with Gaming Hall of Famer Vic Salerno and his company USBookmaking, and a provision in the tribe’s 2015 tribal-state gaming compact. Under the provisions of the 2015 New Mexico gaming compact, tribal nations are permitted to offer any and all forms of Class III gaming including sports wagering, as defined by C.F.R Title 25 Section 502.4 . Casino Reinvestment Continues Throughout the Phoenix Region: In the last five years, the Phoenix region has seen the number of casinos grow more than 20%. This increased competition has resulted in continued reinvestment throughout the region. In 2018, the Santa Ana Star opened its first hotel, a seven-story 204 room full-service hotel. Other expansion efforts in the region include the Yavapai-Apache Nation opening a new hotel at the Cliff Castle Casino in February 2018 and Fort McDowell announcing the construction of a new gaming facility that will replace the current casino in 2020. These casino renovations and expansions are seen as a way for tribes to grow existing revenues amidst increasing competition.
