In 2017, the Sacramento region generated $9.0 billion in gaming revenues, growing at a rate of 7.3%. The growth rate of 7.3% made the Sacramento region the fastest growing tribal gaming region in 2017. The region’s growth in gaming revenues is attributed to both organic growth, as the average casino saw their gaming revenues increase by 1.5%, and new casino expansion, as the region’s number of casinos increased to 74 casinos in 2017. Soboba Joins the List of California Tribes Offering Resort Style Casinos: In February 2019, the Soboba Band of Luiseno Indians opened a new casino resort, providing a significant upgrade to their prior casino which was a decades old tent casino with a snack bar. The new facility offers 7 restaurant options, a full service 200 room hotel, swimming pool, convention center and adjoining golf course. The resort is just one example of how California tribes are reinvesting in their gaming facilities to drive additional revenue growth. Sports Wagering Unlikely for California Tribes: In California, tribal nations will need to renegotiate the terms of their tribal-state gaming compacts before offering sports wagering. However, competing interest will likely undermine any prospects for a successful renegotiation. The State’s tribal casinos, horse tracks, card clubs and the lottery have all expressed interest in offering sports wagering; however, each segment has conflicting views and priorities on how sports wagering should be legalized. Adding additional complications to the prospect of legalized sports wagering is the fact that the tribal gaming industry is contesting the legality of the card clubs, which has created greater discord between the respective gaming segments.
