In 2017, the Portland region generated $3.38 billion in gaming revenues, growing at a rate of 6.5%. The growth rate was the highest growth the region has seen since 2007 when the Portland region generated annual growth of 8.8%. The Portland region also continues to be the only region that has never experienced a year-over-year decline in gaming revenues. The Ilani Casino Completes First Full Year of Operations: The Ilani Casino Resort, owned by the Cowlitz Indian Tribe, opened on April 24, 2017 and completed its first full year of operations in 2018. Prior to its opening, the development was subject to numerous lawsuits, as the Cowlitz Tribe was not federally recognized until February 14, 2000 and the tribe did not have land placed into trust until 2015. The tribe ultimately prevailed in its lawsuits and opened the casino, becoming the closest casino and resort to the 2.4 million people living in the Portland metropolitan area. Washington Tribes Look to Offer Sports Wagering: The ability for tribes in Washington State to offer sports wagering is contingent upon revisions to the pre-existing tribal-state gaming compacts. However, the State appears to be supportive of the expansion of sports wagering. In February 2019, Majority Caucus Chair, Eric Pettigrew, brought forth legislation that would legalize sports wagering for tribal casinos. The bill appears to have the support of the House, with lawmakers remaining optimistic that tribal casino sports wagering will be up and running in Washington State in time for the 2019 NFL season.
