In 2016, the Washington D.C. region generated $7.3 billion in gaming revenues, growing at a rate of 3.8%. The growth within the region is notable as it exceeded both the three-year and five-year compounded annual growth rates despite facing increased competition from a boom in commercial gaming. • The Seneca Nation ends revenue sharing payments to the state of New York. In accordance with the terms of the tribal-state gaming compact, the Seneca Nation stopped making revenue sharing payments to New York in 2017. After 14 years of payments, totaling more than $1.4 billion, the state is asking for more, even as New York continues to encroach upon the nation’s right to gaming exclusivity by opening 14 commercial casinos since 2007. In response to the tribe discontinuing its revenue sharing payments, New York is threatening continued gaming expansion in the Niagara Falls region.
• The Seminole Nation is looking to place a lock on its gaming exclusivity. Since the signing of the 2010 tribal-state gaming compact, state legislators have been looking to revise the
agreement to permit the expansion of commercial gaming outside Miami-Dade and Broward counties. However, the Seminole Nation is looking to take the debate out of the hands of the state legislature. In a coordinated effort with the Disney Corporation and Disney World, the Seminole Nation has garnered the requisite signatures to put a proposed constitutional amendment, titled “Voter Control of Gambling,” on the November 2018 ballot. If voters approve the amendment, the legislature will have little to no say in the process of future gaming expansion.
