RubinBrown Gaming Stats 2011
Examining the number of casinos classified by amount of revenues, the majority of growth has been in the opening of facilities that generate $100 million or less. Between 2007 and 2009, the NIGC reported 28 more facilities in 2009 than in 2007. Of the 28 facilities, only 2 generated more than $100 million dollars. Indian gaming has been inherently limited by tribal lands and regulatory approval. Based on the NIGC listing of tribal operations and other independent casino listings, there are approximately 240 tribes operating 447 casinos in 29 states. Of those states, only four (Alabama, Alaska, Nebraska, and Texas) are limited to Class II facilities. With the industry becoming increasingly competitive and saturated in numerous markets, tribes have been forced to find ways to innovate or expand beyond traditional tribal land and into new markets. Recent examples of tribal innovation and expansion include: • The Prairie Band Potawatomi of Kansas will debut the Firekeeper Golf Course in the spring of 2011, transforming their casino into a resort destination. • The Mohegan Tribe has expanded into commercial gaming through the development of Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, a commercial casino in Pennsylvania. • The Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma acquired Remington Park, a commercial racino in Oklahoma City and continues to pursue other commercial gaming ventures. Overall, growth in Indian gaming is expected to continue with the economic recovery; however, the rapid growth and expansion seen in the early 2000’s is nearing an end. The successful tribes of the future will be the ones that find ways to innovate and expand beyond tribal boundaries.
