National Indian Gaming Analysis
After a decade of rapid growth and expansion, 2009 was the first year in over a decade that Indian gaming suffered from a decline in revenues. Utilizing data compiled by the National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC), Indian gaming revenues declined by 0.7%, or $0.2 billion in 2009. While Indian gaming revenues declined, tribal operations still outperformed their commercial counterparts, as the commercial gaming industry recognized an industry wide decline of 6.45% in 2009. The decline in Indian gaming revenues is largely due to two consumer discretionary spending, which has translated to reduced patron levels and average patron spend.
