Rapid Gains in Sports Betting by Zach Goers, CPA

I t all changed in mid-2018. That’s when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a law that prohibited sports betting setting off high stakes in a number of states as many move to legalize. Prior to May 2018, only three states were allowed to offer sports betting, and only one actively offered contests (Nevada). Today, sports betting can be found within eight states, seven of which have passed state legislation. New Mexico is the most recent state to offer sports betting, with the opening of the Santa Anna Star Casino sports book in October 2018; however, it is the only state that offers sports betting without having passed state legislation.

Sports betting is permissible in New Mexico and at the Santa Anna Star Casino through the state’s tribal gaming compact with the Tamaya Nation. As sports betting continues to grow within the United States, the industry will adapt to offer premier and unique gaming experiences within legalized jurisdictions. The following are some trends, areas of importance and possible directions the sports betting industry has or could take in the coming years.
