Spring 2008 issue of Horizons

knowledge. commitment. value. CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANTS AND BUSINESS CONSULTANTS

If it becomes widely known that a company actively develops its personnel, recruiting and attracting talent becomes a much easier process.

Top executives need to act as both advisers and mentors to top talent. As advisers, they can provide answers to daily task-oriented questions or inquiries relating to the firm’s practices or policies and procedures. An adviser also assists with personal assessments of strengths and areas for improvement. As a mentor, the relationship is deeper to enhance long-term personal growth and career development. Mentors may need to work personally with their protégés to address both personal and professional issues. It requires tremendous planning and strategy to reach or maintain the status of a top-tier architecture and engineering firm. The best firms, however, realize the importance of not only attracting top talent, but also developing and retaining that talent.
