Fall 2017 issue of Horizons
Online Skins Betting Online sports betting is only the tip of the iceberg as technology innovations in ESports have created a whole new kind of product to bet on. Skin betting has become a $7.4 billion dollar segment, which is almost double the amount of bets placed in Las Vegas sports books. Skins are virtual cosmetic items, like special weapons in Counter Strike Global Offensive, that are compared to other stand-ins for cash (casino chips, baseball cards). Skins are backed by cash value and exchanged on third-party websites. ESports enthusiasts use them to wager on the outcome of competitive video-game matches or casino games like roulette, and the transaction takes place solely online. Casino operators, game manufacturers and regulatory bodies have to prepare to evaluate and respond to disruptive technologies.
