Medical Practices: New Models to Adapt to the Ever-Changing Healthcare Environment by Ken Rubin, CPA

M edical practices have long looked for additional revenue sources to support their core businesses. This has included surgery centers, clinics and other ancillary services. However, medical practices have learned over the years that they need to be cognizant as healthcare laws have potentially limited the ability of practices to have ancillary service models. As the healthcare laws have continued to evolve, both physician practices and hospitals have become more active in

their involvement with ancillary services of revenue outside of their core business.

Reimbursements have driven a great deal of activity recently and physicians’ practices have at least looked at the hospital model for their practice and, in many cases, for their ancillary services, such as a surgery center, as well. Again, healthcare laws are very specific as to what value can be associated with each component of the business as well as what valuations are necessary to comply with the law. And, as with all industries, technology has changed the way practices are operated.
